Real-World Walkabouts: High Frequency Word Sleuths

This Real-World Walkabout asks students to don their Sherlock Holmes’ style caps and become word sleuths. How many words can students spot?

MATERIALS NEEDED

• copy of magnifying glass pattern for each student
• high frequency words displayed in classroom (refer to activity for more information)

DIRECTIONS

1. Write a list of high frequency words on the board. Be sure these words are displayed in the classroom on posters, signs, book displays, decorations, and other materials.
2. Give each student a copy of the magnifying glass pattern.
3. Have each student write his or her name on the handle of a magnifying glass pattern.
4. Tell half the students to choose a book and search for the words in the book. Students should say each word aloud and point to each word as they find it. Students should also write each word on the magnifying glass as they find it.
5. Send the other half of the students on a high frequency word search in the classroom. Tell students to tiptoe and sneak up on each word they find, then say each word aloud and jump up when they find it.
6. Students should also write each word on the magnifying glass as they find it.
7. Switch so both groups search for and write words located in books and in the classroom.

Variation: If your school hallways have student work, posters, and other materials displayed, send one group of students into the hallway (with a teacher) to search for high frequency words while the other group searches in the classroom, then switch locations. Tell students to tiptoe and sneak up on each word they find, then say each word aloud and jump up when they find it. Students should also write each word on the magnifying glass as they find it.
